    MoS Interviews Paul Woolford

    Name: Paul Woolford

Style: House, techno, the more interesting side of dubstep and whatever else I fancy…

Day in the life of Paul Woolford?

Usually up at 7 or 8am, breakfast, emailing, studio at 10am through to 6ish, with family time and dinner until 10/11, then studio again until 3am then sleep. Obviously weekends differ with touring.

Tell us a little bit about your history in Ibiza?

I first went there at the age of 8 with my parents, returned when I was 19 and went to the clubs, and thought it was interesting, although musically it was all house music and only that really. Returned in about 2000 and then played at Space in 2003, 2004, and then scored a 6 date residency for We Love in 2005. The roof went on the terrace in 2006 and I then played every week in 2007 and between 10 and 16 dates per year since then.
Over the years I have grown to love the island and especially the local people whom have treated me so well, especially the staff at Ocean Drive hotel in Talamanca, and in various restaurants and the clubs. It’s a place that is dear to my heart and I would hope to live in Ibiza for parts of the year in the future. My life is so hectic currently that it’s unfeasible to live in Ibiza even when it’s the summer months, but I hope to change that in time.

You are resident for We Love at Space, what is it about the club or event that makes you enjoy playing there?

It’s a different way of doing things than all the other clubs on the Island. Putting aside Space’s global reputation for a moment, playing for We Love is different to elsewhere because the booking policy is about bringing a festival to a club environment. So you have 5 areas of music, which reflect 5 different moods. There are few clubs in the world that could attract the likes of Grace Jones, Aphex Twin, the Chemical Brothers, and at the same time cutting-edge underground talent such as Levon Vincent, Appleblim and so on.

    Fosters or sangria?

    Hierbas of course!

    Plans for the summer?

10 dates for We Love, a trip to Brazil to play the legendary Warung again and Giv in Santos, plus the rest of my gigs and production. There are singles in the pipeline for Carl Craig’s Planet E and Phonica’s in-house label in London, as well as a remix package of material coming on Intimacy with contributions from Appleblim & Komonazmuk, Altered Natives, Norman Nodge from Berghain, Ben Sims and various other people. Lots happening.

    Festivals?

Yes indeed – two of them over in Ireland this year, the Mystik Music Festival and the Temple House Festival in Sligo over the summer. I played Glastonbury and Benicassim last year which was fantastic to cross them off my list so it’ll be interesting doing some smaller-scale, more intimate events.

What can we expect to hear from you this Saturday?

    Wait and see…

What are your thoughts on London’s club scene?

Always interesting as long as you make the effort to find the music you want to hear. I often think Londoners are spoilt with the amount of variety and quality you can find but then we have the same situation in Leeds which is excellent. You can’t go wrong with Ministry of Sound, Fabric and the vast amount of warehouse and basement parties going on at the moment.
