Deadmau5 collapses on stage and cancels dates

While preforming in Washington DC this past friday, Deadmau5 collapsed on stage suffering from severe exhaustion. He was taken directly to hospital by medics where he is now under supervision. A statement from his management says “Deadmau5 is sad to advise his fans that on the strict advice of the doctors, he now has no choice but to cancel the next 9 shows of his summer tour schedule to allow for his recovery. Deadmau5 hopes to reschedule appearing in these cities in due course but in the meantime thanks all his fans for their understanding and support.”

Most Unusual Club in the World: Icebar (Multiple Locations)

by Taryn Haight
07.22.2010

If you’ve been a tourist pretty much anywhere in the world, chances are you’ve checked out, read about, or heard about a touristy nightclub known as Icebar. While the temperature remains chilly (23° F), the theme has progressively heated up, causing this nightclub trend to latch on in New York, Orlando, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Saint Tropez, Athens, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul, Dubai, and Mumbai (just to name a few locations). The bad news? You can only hang out at these bars for a limited amount of time and that outfit you spent hours putting together will be hidden by a fugly oversized coat. The good news? Drinks are always served chilled, in glasses made out of imported ice from the Torne River in Jukkasjarvi, Northern Sweden.

Most Unusual Club in the World: Showcase (Paris, France)

by Taryn Haight
07.22.2010

When going out on the town, you’ll typically hop in a cab and rattle off the cross-streets of your nighttime destination. To get to Showcase, one of the most unusual nightclubs in the world, all you have to do is say “Pont Alexandre III” since this place is located right below that famous Parisian bridge. The huge vaulted ceilings curve with the shape of the bridge above, and as far as acoustics go, big name French electronic acts like Chloe have no problem getting the sound from their turntables straight into the ears of the eager partygoers that fill this space. Look out the arched windows onto the glimmering Seine and smile knowing that the cars passing above have no idea that thousands of people are packing the dancefloor of this unusual nightclub below.

10 Best Clubs In the World #7 Stereo – Montreal

#7 Stereo – Montreal
by Marcos Colón & Taryn Haight
07.21.2010

We’ll have to go with Muzik on their decision to rank Stereo in Montreal as one of the top 10 clubs in the world. The sound system at this nightclub alone is enough to entice some of the hottest DJs in the world—including Paul Oakenfold—to spin on Stereo’s turntables. Even the walls are designed to optimize the sound inside this nightclub, with an inside wall three feet away from the outer walls, creating what the venue describes as a “box in a box” technique to get the beats sounding less like they’re blaring from static-ey club speakers and more like they’re coming from a recording studio. Pair the incredible acoustics with top-notch DJ talent and a dancefloor which rests on shock absorbers (to keep your dance moves and energy going strong throughout the night) and you’ve got the recipe to one of the best nightclubs in the world for music and all-around partying.

Most Unusual Club in the World: Mars 2112 (New York, New York)

by Taryn Haight
07.22.2010

Apparently there is life on Mars—they look just like us, eat burgers and chicken fingers just like us, and they get drunk and think they know how to dance just like us. This “Mars” we are referring to, however, is not in outer-space; it’s located right by Times Square in New York City. And because of its cratered, out-of-this-world décor, Mars 2112 earns a spot on our list of the most unusual nightclubs in the world. Between the spacey setting, the Martians wandering the 35,000-square-foot space, and a three-story crystal tree known as the “Crystal Crater,” the only thing earthly that’s left in this bar is the gravity (and even that might be iffy after a few cocktails).

10 Best Clubs In the World #8 The Guvernment – Toronto

#8 The Guvernment – Toronto
by Marcos Colón & Taryn Haight
07.21.2010

We don’t always consider Toronto when it comes to the best places in the world to hear the best music, but in our opinion, The Guvernment has changed that stereotype. This 22,000-square-foot nightclub (or shall we say, “entertainment complex”) has been around for over a decade, and has won EYE Magazine’s “Best Dance Club” award twice during its reign. With so much space, this venue draws both DJ talent and décor from all over the world—disco balls and white drapery recall Miami nightclubs, and red-velvet-drenched alcoves filled with hookah smoke summon Moroccan culture. Rather than travel the world in search of the best nightclub, why not let the sounds and sights of the world’s best clubs come to you. The best part about The Guvernment, is that it does not just reel in DJ talent (like Chus + Ceballos who are performing this month); the nightclub also doubles as a concert venue, inviting guests like MGMT, The Black Keys, Miike Snow and Band of Horses to showcase their talent. And that’s why we consider The Guvernment to be one of the best clubs in the world for music.

Club Space to Close its Doors Indefinitely this Fall

by Clubplanet
07.27.2010

The Miami hot spot known as Space will close its doors this September for an indefinite amount of time, but before it shuts its doors, the club will host two Labor Day weekend parties to say goodbye in style. Space’s management recently issued a statement on their website to announce the club’s closing, but the message did not explain why exactly the club must close, or when it will reopen.

In their online memo, Space’s management compared their closing party “marathon” to the closing parties for Ibiza’s clubs. The statement reads: “Finally after ten amazing years of non-stop action from New Years, to Miami Music Conference, to summer, and to the winter season without rest, Space Miami has decided to take a shot at its own Ibiza style closing party.”

The announcement of Space’s closing has left many with lingering questions. As the rumors continue to swirl, we here at CP have been in contact with club Space’s management and will be able to help clear the air shortly. At this point, everything coming out of Miami is based on pure speculation, but once we have interviewed management as to why the club is closing, you will see it here first. Make sure to stay tuned and keep checking Clubplanet for updates.

But on another note, Space’s management has already begun setting the lineups for their two-day closing spectacular. DJ Boris will headline the first night with DJ Camilo, and minimalist techno DJ, Guy Gerber, will be spinning in the loft. The second night’s DJ set is still up in the air, although Steve Angello has been confirmed to play the terrace.

The Most Unusual Clubs in the World

by Taryn Haight
07.22.2010

Colored lights, disco balls, black leather couches—doesn’t it sometimes feel like every single nightclub out there looks exactly like every other one? Well if you’re looking for a change of pace, these unusual nightclubs can provide a much-needed alternative to the typical nightlife experience… from the complete opposite side of the spectrum. Party in a 6,000-year-old tree, spend your night beneath vaulted ceilings adorned with millions of vertebrae, or tell your cab driver to drop you off below a bridge in Paris. Party at any one of these unusual nightclubs around the world and experience a night unlike any other.

Most Unusual Club in the World: Sunland Baobab (Limpopo, South Africa)

Hanging out inside the trunk of a tree isn’t just for Keebler elves anymore. At this bar, located inside the hollow of a 6,000-year-old Baobab tree, you can play darts, relax with a beer on one of the wooden benches lining the room tree, or just enjoy the WTF factor of partying inside a hollowed-out tree trunk. With a 155-foot-circumference, this 72-foot-tall Baobab tree is cozy enough for a relaxing afternoon and a cold beer with friends. And don’t worry, no trees were harmed in the making of this bar; Baobab trees naturally hollow out after 1,000 years, which totally makes hanging out in a 6,000-year-old tree feel safe.

10 Best Clubs In the World #10 Cielo – New York City

by Marcos Colón & Taryn Haight
07.21.2010

Our knowledge of nightlife doesn’t limit itself to North America, and that’s because our ears don’t only cover the music that comes out of this continent. We do have some pretty notorious nightclubs in the U.S., but if you haven’t seen the nightlife outside of this country, then you’re missing out on some of the top nightclubs in the world. From Germany to England, Spain to Singapore, there are nightclubs that constantly try to stake the claim as “Best in the World.” We’ve narrowed down the list to the top ten best nightclubs in the world for music, and here’s what we’ve come up with.

#10 Cielo – New York City

If you’re looking for the best house music in New York City, there are only two venues worth mentioning: Pacha NYC and Cielo. For those ravers and techno-music junkies out there who nightly crave the sounds of deep European dance music and floor-pulsing, heavy-hitting house in an upscale environment, Cielo is where it’s at. Found between 9th and Washington in the Meatpacking District, Cielo boasts a simple space, with a ‘70s playboy feel and a rowdy Ibiza flare, with nothing but house music, and those who crave it, filling the nightclub. Since 2004, the posh party haven has racked up tons of titles, including “Best Deep House Club” (New York Magazine, 2006), “Best Club” (ClubWorld, 2008) and “Best Party” for Dance.Here.Now (ClubWorld, 2009). Perhaps it’s the world-famous DJs this club attracts or perhaps it’s the reputation that continuously propels Cielo’s success that keep it going strong, but either way, it doesn’t look like this venue will be leaving the spotlight anytime soon.

Defected LIVE at Ministry of Sound

Two free VIP tickets up for grabs

If you can’t decide whether to attend a concert or a dance party this weekend, you could do a lot worse than heading down to Ministry of Sound on Saturday and check out their Defected LIVE event, which seeks to recreate house tracks in a live setting, fronted by the original artists on vocals.

This Saturday 24th July will see Candi Staton, Barbara Tucker, Julie McKnight and Steve Edwards, all performing their house hits as backed by the Defected house band, which consists of Robin Lee, players from the live bands of Basement Jaxx and Amy Winehouse, and other very skilled musicians with various impressive qualifications that due to limitations of space we can’t get into at this moment. The point is, these guys can recreate a house groove like nobody’s business.

Interested? You can even get in for free if you fancy, you just have to be the first to email joe.roberts@djmag.com with your name and contact number.

If that doesn’t work out for you, there’s also the possibility of actually buying tickets here for the low (relatively) price of £20.

For more info and full line ups, check out www.defected.com and www.ministryofsound.com/club.
