IMS Day 1

IMS Day 1: Dance Biz Celebrates Success

By Gary Smith, Ibiza

The third International Music Summit (IMS), held at Ibiza Gran Hotel May 26-28, began on a positive note with speakers identifying the dance genre’s apparent resurgence.

The event started with a fascinating insight into the popularity of dance culture presented by analyst Kevin Watson.

“What we were aiming to do was to define what this industry is about and how big it is by measuring media impact,” he said.

Watson said the video for David Guetta’s “When Love Takes Over” (Virgin), featuring Kelly Rowland, was seen by more than 50 million people, mainly through YouTube and MySpace.

“When you also take into account the millions of Facebook and Twitter fans who follow Tiesto, we are looking at acts who have considerably larger followings than a rock group such as Kings Of Leon,” he added.

Mike Pickering’s keynote speech was full of optimism. “This is a hugely exciting time in electronic music,” he said. “The young kids of today reference the great dance tunes of 10 and 20 years ago in much of the music they do and just looking at the Coachella line-up, it was Guetta, deadMau5 and 2ManyDJs headlining because they have [realized] how to put on a great show.”

Pickering, Sony Music SVP of A&R, announced the appointment of a Scottish dance music star at the revived Sony dance label Deconstruction.

“My new A&R man at Deconstruction is Calvin Harris,” Pickering said. “He told me he really wanted to do it and I think he’ll be a perfect fit.”

Global DJ superstar Erick Morillo revealed the secret behind his resurgent profile in the Big Dog DJs interview with Pete Tong, DJ and IMS founder.

“There’s been a huge change from 10 years ago in that back then, my label Subliminal had become a big operation with lots of staff, but suddenly we weren’t selling records anymore because people could download them for free,” he said. “Now people will pay for downloads, partly because it’s so easy, so running a label has become viable again although we are digital-only these days.”

At the Meet The Future presentation, Jason Bentley, music supervisor on the new “Tron” film, admitted that Disney had initially been nervous about giving the project to Daft Punk.

“I was asked to take them to meet all the top film score composers and they dutifully went to see them all and really listened to what they had to say, but at the end they said they wanted to do it themselves,” he said. “And the music has been an integral part of the film, being played on set during scenes, as opposed to being composed at the end. They are game-changers.”

IMS linked up with W Hotel in Barcelona last night (May 25) featuring an opening party with Tong.

IMS Day 2

IMS Day 2: David Guetta’s Amazing Year

By Gary Smith, Ibiza

Day two of the International Music Summit (IMS) in Ibiza featured the world’s most famous DJ, David Guetta, in the Big Dog DJ Interview.

Guetta, fresh off the back of an amazing year that has seen him established as a major touring act, told the audience at the dance music conference that his career left him somewhat breathless.

“The last 10 years went pretty well but the last 12 months have been something amazing and I’m now in a position where I’m obliged to review my schedule every two months in order to try and accommodate all the requests I’m getting from other artists,” said the French DJ and producer.

“But it’s not about me, the most exciting thing is what is going to [happen] with dance music globally. The genre is poised to take over the world.”

Guetta also reiterated what Erick Morillo said yesterday (May 26) during the conference.

“Being a DJ is just not enough any more,” said Guetta. “You have to be able to make music as well as mix and pick other people’s material, that’s what gave me my U.S. breakthrough. Working with Black Eyed Peas and Akon resulted in us making music that broke through the usual genre barriers on U.S. radio, with ‘Sexy Bitch’ and ‘I Gotta Feeling’ both being played on pop, dance and urban stations.”

Guetta’s appearance was preceded by the presentation of the remixed version of the IMS Burn Anthem. The track was created by French duo Cassius and then a remix was completed by dance legend Arthur Baker and producer Robin Millar, who has worked with artists including Sade, Peter Gabriel and Fine Young Cannibals.

Commenting on his first time working with Baker, Millar said the dance scene is fascinating. “I get the chance to be a novice again, and working with Arthur was a fantastic experience,” he said.

Producer Tommy D made an impassioned plea for the reestablishment of credits on digital files. “Releases are a team effort and if we don’t credit all the various people who contribute to a release we are losing something important in terms of the history of our culture,” he said. “The people behind an artist deserve respect but it is us the industry that has to fight for the return of credits.”

Speaking on the Meet The Future panel, national U.K. top 40 station Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac said she receives the equivalent of a postal sack full of physical releases every week.

“And then there are all the digital files that I’m sent,” she said. “It is crazy but I do my best to listen to all of it and then I choose tracks for my show, which are then sent to my producer who will occasionally suggest a change in order, but what you’re hearing on the show is very much my idea of banging dancefloor tunes.”

Dizzee Rascal, Fatboy Slim To Play World Cup Shows

By Diane Coetzer, Johannesburg

With just over two weeks to go to the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, a slate of live music events have been announced as part of the entertainment taking place around the month-long tournament.

Leading the charge is Cool Britannia, a Cape Town-based event that runs the full-length of the tournament (June 11 to July 11) and is based out of the Cape Town International Convention Centre, just a few kilometers away from the newly built Cape Town Stadium.

Headlining Cool Britannia is Dizzee Rascal, who makes his live South African debut at the event on June 16. He is joined by Fatboy Slim who plays the event on June 18 while South African township rock band Reburth, Cape Town electronica act Good Luck, and Mozambican Afro-dub outfit 340ml are among the local acts named to the bill.

Cool Britannia also features a strong line-up of top-drawer South African DJs including DJ Fresh, Euphonik, Roger Goode, Black Coffee, Tbo Touch, Milkshake, Crazy White Boy and Dean Fuel.

“We’re excited to be part of Cape Town’s big world party, and will be marking the occasion with a number of firsts,” said Cool Britannia managing director Conor Nolan. “Dizzee Rascal can’t wait to play his first African gig, and given the response of 150,000 fans in Glastonbury last year, his live show will put shivers down your spine.”

Also using live music as the jump-off point are the FIFA Fan Fests that are being held in each of the nine host cities.

Along with Afro-folk duo Blk Sonshine and indie rockers Desmond and the Tutus, BLK JKS, a South African rock outfit signed to U.S. indie Secretly Canadian, is among the acts to play Johannesburg’s FIFA Fan Fest in Newtown.

BLK JKS also plays the Kick-Off Celebration Concert on June 10 at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg. R&B artist Loyiso Bala, hip-hop solo artist Tumi Molekane, 340ml, Afro-soul group Kwani Experience, and Afro-folk singer-songwiter Steadyrock! were all added to the concert’s line-up.

International acts John Legend, Black Eyes Peas, Shakira and Alicia Keys were already confirmed for the line-up.
